Hand Lettered A and Watercolor Azalea

This project is part of a study in letter styles and object styles beginning with that letter. Each week will focus on one letter and one object beginning with that letter in order to collect and practice various artistic styles with each.

Has A come and gone already? That time-disappearing speed must mean I’m having fun. I hope you are too. And already I see there will be some letter styles I continue until the end of the alphabet and some that I drop off after a few letters. Feel free to do the same as you study your letters and objects. Make this your study. Only force a finish if you’re sure you want the end result. I don’t want an alphabet exemplar of letters I don’t like and won’t use. There are a thousand or more new styles to try instead.

Let’s review A and Azalea.

Dip pen lettered Style (I numbered this list so I don’t have to describe the location of the letters as I refer to them.)

  • Favorites. 1-8 and 16-19.
  • Not so Favorites. The bubble style (15) might not stay, along with the wobbly styles (11 and 12). Maybe I will continue on with one of them to see if I like them more as time passes.
  • Number 20 is my standard handwriting A for comparison.

  • Favorites. I don’t know if I can pick a favorite. Each time I try, I think about the things I like about another style. I love their differences.
  • I regret that I couldn’t add a few more styles to my one page, like one using masking fluid. But … I may have trouble keeping up with this study as it is, so that might end up a good thing.

Azalea Styles

  • Favorites. Realistic Loose, Loose with Ink, Realistic Ink with Wash, and Abstract.
  • Not so Favorite. Blind Contour with Abstract. I love the blind contour drawing, but I feel “Meh” about the watercolor on it.
  • I like the whole bush view, but when I see it next to the other ones, I like it less. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to through it on a card for someone.

What did you think of your A study? What did you discover about you and your art? I’d love to hear about it in the comment section!

Enjoy!

Just a brainy creative with a fascination about how people think and understand. I use watercolor and letter design to encourage connection ... with self, the environment, and especially the people who live there.
