Letter V and Vision

Letter V and Vision are part of a watercolor and ink study in letter styles and object styles beginning with that letter. Each study will focus on one letter and one object beginning with that letter in order to collect and practice various artistic styles and alphabets.

Letter V starts us back into our alphabet study project. Letter V?! Already? And, at the same time, we’re only at V?! I didn’t realize how long 26 letters could take me. Four more letters to go until we have an alphabet of styles. Unless, of course, I add a study of lowercase letters or of numbers … or of symbols. That could be fun.

For letter V, I’ve stepped a little bit out of my usual study subject. Again, actually … I realize Christmas was a little out of my usual too.

I hashed over several words for letter V, none of which really appealed to me. Le vin (wine in French), vine, vineyard, Victorian design. Oh, I like these things, but none of them quite fit. Have you ever seen a vineyard in cold weather? It’s not as inspiring as one with clusters of grapes hanging one the vines.

Then, completely aside from this project, I started looking at the new year, making plans for my blog, thinking about a theme or word for the year, and processing my vision and goals for life and business. Last year, I printed off a goal sheet from another blog that I enjoy.

This year, I wanted to design my own goal sheet to keep track of my top goals for the year. Written goals have a higher chance success (check out an article about it), partly because we can display and see them, partly because the act of thinking through our goals specifically and moving those thoughts to paper stores them in our long-term memory.

That’s when it dawned on me … Letter V and Vision. So I worked with different styles of the word vision in hopes of creating a visually appealing goal sheet.

Here is what I learned.

Dip Pen Letter V Styles

• V surprised me with the number of ways I could play with its look. I even tucked a few extra styles away that didn’t fit the current list of alphabets.
• Favorites: 1, 9, 11, 16, 19.
• Least favorite: 15.

Watercolor and Ink Letter V Styles

• Again, letter V holds a lot of possibility: thick and thin contrasting sides, flourishes from either end, or tall and short side-by-side.
• Favorite: the gothic bold style V.
• Least favorite: the mermaid style. I think it might look confusing in a word rather than looking like a solidly identifiable V.

Watercolor and Ink Vision Styles

• Fun! Bright! In the middle of winter especially, fun and bright stand out. I needed a pop of rainbow on this gray day. And goals should look cheery and interesting.
• I used masking fluid on a few of these, so I didn’t need to worry about staying out of the letters with the watercolor. I like to get a little sloppy with my water. Adds to the fun.
• Favorite: the rainbow bleed vision with goals under it, but I love how most of these turned out.

There you have it! Letter V and Vision.
